On a basic level, the concept of chunk competition is similar to the concept of animal family units such as wolf packs or lion prides fighting over territory, but generalized into a form which also applies to human societies. Zebras which are able to merge into a single herd are not experiencing chunk competition at the herd scale. Native species and invasive species in the same area may experience chunk competition.
