These three things are lumped together according to the [[E:DemonHauntedWorld|Carl Sagan definition]] of everything that can be considered a fringe science being comparable in its form if not necessarily in its purpose. Magic ritual ("magic") is the practice of rituals toward some immaterial end which does not require belief in any kind of god, or in [[E:chaos magic|edge cases]], even in the existence of a supernatural. Due to this distinction [[E:MAWI|some writers in progressive anthropology]] separate the development of magic ritual from the development of religion and treat them as different entities. This Category is neutral about the matter of whether religion and magic are truly separate, and is simply grouping it with religion to say either that practices consisting of only magic ritual are equally as valid as Christianity or that all three things are equal in not being a [[E:Materialism|Materialist]] model of reality in and of themselves.
