      I was always implicitly told before about the age of 18 that the United States won the Cold War because it followed this rule. but as I got older and saw how often it was broken I realized that that statement was almost totally false.

     this one only gets crazier when you add in other lines from the speech, doesn't it. [Stalin's government locks up tens of thousands of Trotskyites] Stalin: we shall pay any price to assure the success of liberty
     it's almost a little contradictory. it gets at that central contradiction between Marxism having a definition of freedom, such as freeing a country from first world control, or creating a better world that doesn't waste labor ('freedom from necessity'), and then people inside the country getting upset when the government actually acts to protect its central objectives. some of them for the wrong reasons. Trotsky alone is allowed to object because he can claim to be creating Bolshevism over again, so at least he can claim to be protecting the same central objectives a different way.

     / If the government were the arbiter of our rights, then it could take them away / Bourgeois representatives cannot create human rights; this is to imply that only getting rid of capitalism can create rights (sense) / (9k) -> there really isn't enough space in the character limit for outward proposition labels to fully clarify why this is a "good" remark for Stalin. it's the notion that bourgeois democracy doesn't actually create any meaningful rule by the people but Marxism at least opens up the possibility to probe what is wrong with society and how to get rid of capitalism and create a better society. pretty amazing compared with Bishop Robert Barron's appeal to rights literally coming from God.

     / Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country -> this is disgusting within the full context of the original speech, because it was pretty much going for a full-on 1991 event and the destruction of Third World national independence. but in context of defending the Soviet Union it's not so bad.
