Main entry

  1. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and postmodernism -> this sounds silly and you'd think it's impossible to talk about but it's quite arguable it's one of the main themes of the show as it goes on.

Season 5

  1. Starlight Glimmer is similar to the Argentinian dictatorship because she tried to eradicate identities / Starlight Glimmer is similar to the discourse that tries to suppress identities [1] -> I hate that I know just enough about Foucault to know that although "discourse" came from an automatic translation it's probably exactly the correct word for the argument being made
  2. Suppressing art that doesn't fit in with the official narrative makes societies easier to control; this is to imply that art defends people's rights [2] / They don't need to kill you if they strip you of everything that makes you powerful [3] -> okay, first of all, I have to halfway give you this one because it was quite literally in the Kirin episode if not in this one. so, well done on that.
second of all... really? like. if art is such a powerful tool of resistance, why is Liberal-republicanism needed? if all it takes to defeat Undemocracy is to "make the reactionaries angry by making art" then what exactly are laws and cops and Congress for? if you're going to claim they don't protect anyone, then that might be technically true, but like, why does anyone vote if making art reaches several people and should logically be far more powerful than any single vote can be? you can't explain why anyone ever shows up to vote with a statement like this.
why was it a bunch of tired bureaucrats with no principles that defeated Stalin and restored capitalism, if art and media are so powerful?
  3. Having a unique talent makes ponies irreplaceable [4] / (9k) -> so, the cutie mark crusaders are disposable then? this has some very dark implications.
really, the show goes a long way toward implying that Starlight would be worthless and replaceable if she was actually doing this because she didn't get a cutie mark, and she needs to listen to what the ponies with cutie marks say because ability at something is the hallmark of being ethical.

Season 8

  1. My Little Pony G4 seasons 5-9 are bad because they contain social progress -> please stop.
  2. Twilight's friendship school is an operation to undermine other tribes or kingdom's national sovereignty by destroying their culture -> okay, this is at least creative and had some thought put into it, so I don't hate it, but I think this is taking a real problem in the show and then picking the wrong problem out of it. it seems to show a very fraught way of thinking, but all in all, it's a near miss.
  3. Twilight destroyed Ponyville with globalization -> I genuinely can't address this without bringing up Stalin. so... the disaster in Ukraine, that made a lot of people flee the Soviet Union and almost made some people outright hate Russia and Ukraine as populations whether they realize it or not, happened partly because the country was refusing to open up towns to outside nations. then everyone in Russia and Ukraine got modernization (capitalism) forced on them from the outside by multiple countries at once whether they wanted it or not.
  4. Postmodernity is not feasible / It is impossible for there to be a single condition, historical period, or entity collectively referred to as postmodernity / If the central concept of postmodernism is too logically contradictory with itself to even be possible — it is impossible for everyone to believe in a model about models being impossible and call it the most correct model which thus logically must be believed by everyone — it is also not possible for the condition of postmodernity to be created in reality, because if the whole world experiences postmodernity, then the world must be experiencing many physical processes which are incapable of unifying into a single phenomenon of postmodernity that if real would truly leave philosophers stumped and truly evade philosophical description; this is to imply that if postmodernity were real it would be described by several completely different theories which conflict with each other, similar to un-settled concepts in science like quantum-scale gravity, rather than a single relatively consistent set of ideas that keeps recurring in postmodernist literature as a single narrative
  5. Discourses and narratives are the same thing -> no idea if this one is true but I have to throw it at the wall anyway.
  6. Postmodern literature is impossible / A work of fiction cannot both have a single overarching story arc and be postmodern -> I really have to throw this at MLP G4 because this seems to be exactly what's being attempted.
  7. Ethnic groups tolerating each other is a form of modernism -> nobody acknowledges it and it needs to be said. you need a unified narrative of reality to have diversity and tolerance, otherwise you eventually get bigotry when two people-groups' narratives of what's true clash enough. see pronounced Q56-92 "Cultures are culture eaters".

  2. Cultures are culture eaters / No countable culture is ever stationary due to factors such as reproduction and migration, and as such, all countable cultures including countable towns, countable tribes, countable countries, countable corporations, and countable agoras, constantly possess a particular probability to destroy each other through chunk competition as all their individuals accumulate either wealth, friends, or descendants; apart from highly specialized philosophies like antinatalism, no exercise of "ethics" or "Enlightenment reason" can possibly change this, because the sheer chunk competition between separate islands of people to claim individuals or material resources that could be used by a given chunk of individuals is the cause of the violence
  3. Nice walnuts don't get cracked / Nice walnuts not getting imminently broken is paradise / Countries are like walnuts: they only taste good when you crack them open / (9k)
