I really doubt Kairi is supposed to be an embodied gender identity or DID alter type of thing. my guess is the intention was a Jungian anima or something like that, this character is some kind of Jungian shadow of the character's main personality. but I also don't actually have enough information to say what exactly she is.

Kingdom Hearts and Deltarune

Ralsei is basically Kairi (Deltarune, Kingdom Hearts) / spoiler: to save Kairi (generic) -> yes! this was the theory I had but I had no idea this also happened in a Kingdom Hearts game. that makes a lot of sense. Toby has a weird thing for obliquely referencing RPGs with the same central themes as Deltarune, probably because he grew up with them but who knows. when this one specific game is so similar to Deltarune, as opposed to the overall series, I can believe it.
