Structuralist Machines dancing on the head of a pin - what a lot of US politics sounds like really

[cr. 1703296027]

Structuralism and free speech -
there is a particular XKCD comic held up whenever anybody talks about "free speech" [*x1357]
it seems insightful if you have not engaged in large-scale movements or read much philosophy
"it's just that the people listening think you're an asshole, and they're showing you the door"

unfortunately this conceals a much greater, almost infinitely-deep problem

Liberal societies begin with the government granting people freedom to act as they please in civil society without running into problems with the government
yet if we want to actually use any of these freedoms, we are obligated to go /into/ civil society and find a place within it where we can actually use the abilities we were promised. there are no guarantees of this; it is entirely possible civil society will refuse to let us in and never give us these abilities, and in practice we will end up without anything.

how many times have we seen that creators go into corporations wanting to create storylines featuring LGBT+ and the corporation does not give them the ability to express themselves? many, many times

women getting pushed out of universities -
problem of civil society and the existing social structure showing them the door

Kimberlé Crenshaw pushed to other university; racists showed her the door
this incident is often misrepresented as the "Black college" turning away White people out of prejudice and not letting them express themselves at the Black college, while attempting to bury actual cases of Black people being turned away from "White" colleges and ending up at the Black college
why be this level of dishonest rather than framing things as a complicated problem of the internal elements of both universities expelling people that do not fit into their overall structure?
honesty would take away the possibility of tirelessly defending a discontinuous political empire from being integrated into other social graphs and likely having to change its ideology. [*dt]

a Structuralist style approach to human rights has historically been very useful for /preventing/ human rights

if you think people are committing racism by putting up a "Whites Only" sign, and you've gone everywhere but people still turn you away
it's just that people don't like your kind, and are showing you the door

Structuralists may be offended at the suggestion they are using the same logic that empowers racism
but no matter what period of the Structuralist tradition it is this is still true

poststructuralism had certain improvements over the first structuralism, and yet
it is ridiculously easy to coopt even poststructuralism into a diagram of how racists can win

* early: parts of society form machines. sometimes pieces of the society take on a life of their own and vy across society for power, such as "The Left". "The Left" is rampantly blazing a path over everyone's freedom to not accept progressive ideas. to restore the body to health "The Left" must be destroyed.

* late: parts of society form networks. sometimes these networks are oppressive to the people inside them. "The Left" is rampantly creating oppressive networks where nobody can believe, express, or enact conservative ideas. people everywhere need to route around "The Left" to create new conservative networks that take over the system and prevent the networks of "The Left" from coming back.

it is not easy, even if it may technically be possible, to coopt Marxism this way.

in Marxism-Leninism, there is always a filtering to the process of forming parties which tends to reject factions which are clearly unethical or separated from reality. even if a party is suffering from deep confusion about what is right and wrong, it will generally be obligated to accept anybody who properly understands class analysis, labor movements, and other principles of Leninism; whatever bigotry may occur within a Marxist party is forced through the boundaries of a movement that necessarily welcomes all people to study the theories and support the movement.

even in Trotskyism, if racists are trying to take over Trotskyist parties it is likely the groups will attempt to excise the racist section into a separate group so they can carry on trying to form a progressive movement. the tendency of Trotskyist groups to split and re-combine along lines which would be unintuitive without an atlas may seem mostly frustrating but it does have certain upsides.
