Main entry

  1. Orkastle / Orkastle (upcoming console-style RPG by Howard Blast, estimated first chapter release 2028)

On literature

  1. A higher-level understanding of Japanese gives a better understanding of the narrative structure of works written in Japanese -> it's very easy to overstate this, but, yeah, to some extent I think it's correct. good translations of a work are possible for works like video games and manga, where you only really need a high-level understanding of English to pull it off. audiovisual works often tend to suffer because people who aren't familiar with the Japanese language keep butchering the voice acting. what you actually need is an understanding of language which is as good as the creator's so you can replicate the same level of language use in another language. that is difficult to achieve, though possible, and that is why a lot of things sound better in their original Japanese, or in their original English before they were translated into Japanese; it's really just because translation is hard, not because the Japanese language is special. but, yeah, nothing is wrong here except being oddly specific by mentioning the Japanese language.
  2. Many acts of marketing perform education / Consumerism is inseparable from media representation / otaku culture was finally reaching the West (Howard Blast; sense) -> [...] publishers can support a seemingly endless churn of manga, a lot of which are similar to each other, and yet, every one of these that is translated for another country does a little bit to counteract prejudices against the country of Japan. capitalism is a very social process of going from no relationship to building bonds through exchanging goods [...].

Howard Blast's theoretical errors

  1. If I don't have a high reading level at English, then Toby Fox writing colloquial dialogue is bad [1] -> no. the ability to write in colloquial language to portray realistic characters is a form of language mastery — period. it's fair to knock Toby Fox for not "really" speaking Japanese, but you cannot both do that and have a "Toby-level" mastery of English. [2] you have to pick one.

Analyzing Undertale

  1. superstructural fantasy world / (9k) -> very prominent motif in Undertale and Deltarune that quietly sneaks into these analyses in various ways. the outside world, the barrier. the videogame, the commentary. the videogame, the cynicism. the videogame, the weird creepypasta distortion.
  2. knight of justice / archetypical high-fantasy knight / pronounced ゆうしゃ / (9k)
knight of justice + crisis = hero's journey. knight of justice + postmodernism = conflicted knight of justice.
  3. king of injustice / prince of darkness / lord of darkness / pronounced まおう / (9k)
king of injustice + Goku = Vegeta
  4. conflicted knight of justice / (9k)
  5. justice knight versus evil king / knight of justice versus maō (pronounced まおう) / (9k)
justice knight versus evil king + anticommunist fable = knight of justice versus Mao.
justice knight versus evil king + Fantasy would be more historically accurate with Leninisms = evil king versus Mao.

Related

  1. BadEmpanada's theoretical errors / (9k) -> has basically nothing to do with this entry at all except that the format of error/correction is similar and actually somewhat inspired the error/correction section here.
