- If a Trotskyist civilization committed imperialism, what would it look like? -> I've had this thought in my mind for a while that the material processes of imperialism in Liberal-republicanism and the abstract processes of imperialism in anarchism and Trotskyism are so uncomfortably similar that if Trotskyists successfully created a workers' state it might still be imperialist, only this time it would be imperialist specifically to create Trotskyism. like, you have 10 or so Trotskyist republics and they see another country and they just go take the thing over in a way similar to how the United States does it but not exactly the same. I still lean philosophically toward that being possible. but the real question is what would it materially look like? how would they exert their power to successfully create Trotskyism?
there are a few material structures that we can be relatively confident would exist. the orange bloc may have a military. the target countries may have regional Trotskyist parties. knowing the state of Trotskyist parties today, it's a little funny to imagine the regional Trotskyist parties actually successfully forming a durable ruling population over the country and wielding control over it. certainly if they did they could link into the orange bloc / Fourth International and the country would be absorbed. but is that believable? the orange bloc just flat out occupying the countries and taking over businesses to construct a mono-structure and putting the theorists in power feels a little more physically possible.
as I describe that I can immediately imagine Trotskyists finding out about that prediction and actually realizing that this is literally just what the Soviet Union did in the World War II to Cold War era, and by their definition is literally "Stalinism". (this is a little worse I think. I think the notion of "Bolshevism created by force" was a little exaggerated? Stalin didn't recommend getting rid of the Yugoslav monarchy when the conditions weren't right.) they know that now. the question is if they would remember or forget that if a transition into Trotskyism was actually happening. like, they are really adamant that out of all named Marxisms and civilizational shapes you can't create anything but Trotskyism. Trotskyists understand that Leninism has to be protected; they aren't anarchists. so just how far would they be willing to go to protect Leninism?
