Main entry

  1. Orkastle / Orkastle (upcoming console-style RPG by Howard Blast, estimated first chapter release 2028)

On literature

  1. A higher-level understanding of Japanese gives a better understanding of the narrative structure of works written in Japanese -> it's very easy to overstate this, but, yeah, to some extent I think it's correct. good translations of a work are possible for works like video games and manga, where you only really need a high-level understanding of English to pull it off. audiovisual works often tend to suffer because people who aren't familiar with the Japanese language keep butchering the voice acting. what you actually need is an understanding of language which is as good as the creator's so you can replicate the same level of language use in another language. that is difficult to achieve, though possible, and that is why a lot of things sound better in their original Japanese, or in their original English before they were translated into Japanese; it's really just because translation is hard, not because the Japanese language is special. but, yeah, nothing is wrong here except being oddly specific by mentioning the Japanese language.
  2. Many acts of marketing perform education / Consumerism is inseparable from media representation / otaku culture was finally reaching the West (Howard Blast; sense) -> [...] publishers can support a seemingly endless churn of manga, a lot of which are similar to each other, and yet, every one of these that is translated for another country does a little bit to counteract prejudices against the country of Japan. capitalism is a very social process of going from no relationship to building bonds through exchanging goods [...].
  3. Umineko is a better mystery story than Deltarune -> ok. that is a valid answer to my 'complaint'. I genuinely don't know much about Umineko right now so maybe I will have to take a look at it to make any good points about Deltarune.
    (note: I'm reading it now)
  4. Good writing makes answers more interesting than questions -> I could not agree with that more. like, that was a criticism I silently had against Undertale without knowing it until recently when Deltarune actually explained things

Howard Blast's theoretical errors

  1. If I don't have a high reading level at English, then Toby Fox writing colloquial dialogue is bad [1] -> no. the ability to write in colloquial language to portray realistic characters is a form of language mastery — period. it's fair to knock Toby Fox for not "really" speaking Japanese, but you cannot both do that and have a "Toby-level" mastery of English. [2] you have to pick one.

Analyzing Undertale

  1. superstructural fantasy world / (9k) -> very prominent motif in Undertale and Deltarune that quietly sneaks into these analyses in various ways. the outside world, the barrier. the videogame, the commentary. the videogame, the cynicism. the videogame, the weird creepypasta distortion.
  2. knight of justice / archetypical high-fantasy knight / pronounced ゆうしゃ / (9k)
knight of justice + crisis = hero's journey. knight of justice + postmodernism = conflicted knight of justice.
  3. king of injustice / prince of darkness / lord of darkness / pronounced まおう / (9k)
king of injustice + Goku = Vegeta
  4. conflicted knight of justice / (9k)
  5. justice knight versus evil king / knight of justice versus maō (pronounced まおう) / (9k)
justice knight versus evil king + anticommunist fable = knight of justice versus Mao.
justice knight versus evil king + Fantasy would be more historically accurate with Leninisms = evil king versus Mao.
  6. Varik is secretly afraid of monsters -> what seems to have led to the themes of prejudice in Undertale
  7. Videogames offer freedom from people (Howard Blast) / Video games offer freedom from a country's current historical period -> oh boy. this proposition thinks it's deep but it's not. media from Japan don't really offer any escape from the United States. it's all just the same capitalism in Japan, which is why those "classic console RPGs" were made within Japan. people really don't stop and think about that enough. manga is slightly different because that industry doesn't quite exist in other countries.
  8. Toby Fox is not a conventional otaku (Howard Blast) -> oh my god. on one hand this is a dumb argument. on the other hand it's beautiful and I love it. this man just pushes so stubbornly at finding some really specific point about what otaku media is, which will surely not actually be all that good, but will probably be at least a little bit interesting. and that's rather funny to me. so please keep going and finish your game, orkastle man. it's probably going to be Something even if I don't know what the thesis of it is.
  9. Deltarune is reaching its end because the prophecy has been played through twice, which is longer than expected / Deltarune is a copy of the first round of Deltarune (Howard Blast; sense) [3]

Subjective themes

  1. Narrative analysis, when done well, leads up to historical materialism performed on the real world / Narrative analysis should be a Communist (joke phrasing) -> this proposition is almost an emotion and I was really struck with it when watching Howard Blast's literary analysis "lecture".
I think it genuinely might be true that college is so incapable of actually teaching people things which are predictive in the real world that reading random industry people's tutorials (not grifters that make money selling the tutorials but people that use the tutorials to successfully sell things), and businesses shaming each other for bad technique might actually be the future of education. I can't say I like that outcome exactly, but I do notice patterns whenever they appear in front of me.

  1. Vox fights the orcs / (9k) -> is... there any connection here? there might not be, but with the stated vague connection to Undertale, and all the queer themes in Undertale, I can't help but wonder if there is.
  2. BadEmpanada's theoretical errors / (9k) -> has basically nothing to do with this entry at all except that the format of error/correction is similar and actually somewhat inspired the error/correction section here.
  3. Deltarune and petty-bourgeois vision / Undertale and petty-bourgeois vision / Deltarune and the Bucky period / with the videogame industry crashing out and most products being distractionslop -> there is a certain segment of people... that when they talk about Undertale or Deltarune start oozing Toryism. sometimes they ooze it in obvious ways, but this is about them oozing it in subtle ways. 1) the concept that Deltarune or OFF is ruined by having a larger team making heterogeneous contributions, instead of the singular vision of a one-man team 2) the concept that 'the gaming industry went downhill' from when it was smaller projects with smaller budget. very transparent, you almost literally brought classes into the discussion.
  4. the Buckyeth century -> the motif of an abstract historical period people imagine where everything was artisan or petty-bourgeois businesses and because everything wasn't Big supposedly everything was better. includes the connotation that the person saying this probably but not certainly thinks gay people ruined media.
Bucky Katt + mythical past (European fascism) = the Buckyeth century.
the Buckyeth century + Deltarune = Deltarune and petty-bourgeois vision.
