"NickelBank" is not an individual user, but a location for collecting interesting links that count as "nickels". These are being stored in the User: namespace so as not to clutter up searches for actual Ontology pages about ongoing concepts that usually have lasting relevance, or more substantial articles within the Research: namespace, or Templates or Categories. "Nickels" are important in their own way, but they hardly count as content pages, so they need their own special area.

The notability criteria for nickel links are relatively lax — they are meant to facilitate the very limited kinds of "original research" that are permitted on Ontology pages. Anything that can reasonably appear in multiple "References" sections is eligible for a nickel page. Some nickel links are not appropriate for making into Ontology pages, but this doesn't mean they haven't passed the minimal notability threshold for nickel links.

In some cases, a nickel page will be referenced enough that it will be evident the nickel link is "notable" to the extent it makes sense to promote it to an Ontology page. In that case, find an existing Ontology page, copy in the code, and fit the information into the Ontology page template; in the change summary, put something like "promote to Ontology page".

Best practices for nickels[edit]

  • Include all links which currently or previously held the nickel in question.
    • Note which links are broken.
    • You may include links to summaries, reviews, or analyses of the nickel along with links that actually contain it. This may be useful in the case of paywalled nickels.
    • In some cases, the summaries, reviews, or analyses will constitute their own nickel link worthy of its own page. If so, split them off into a new page, and link the new nickel page on the first nickel page.
  • You may include original bullet-point summaries of the nickel link unique to the nickel page. As long as they are not AI-generated, "spark-note" summaries are welcome.
  • Don't try to copy the full text of something onto a nickel page. There are nuanced, non-obvious reasons for this related to things like long-term archival and archive reliability. If you want the text of the nickel to be easily accessible, it is fine to link to an external archive such as archive.org, archive.is, or Pastebin.
    • Link only to external archives which are commonly considered ""legal"".
    • Do not link to external archives which this wiki classifies as "anarchist secret operations".
  • Nickel links should not explicitly contain things Ontology pages are not allowed to contain. If the nickel link mentions the prohibited topic in text in a neutral tone but does not endorse it or show it explicitly, that is considered acceptable.
    • There is some leeway granted here for prohibited topics having to do with ideological framing like "an article which is an example of Toryism", "an article which is an example of anticommunism", "an article which is an example of Trotskyite-conspiracy rhetoric", or "an article which is an example of misinformation". These links should not be posted for the purpose of endorsing the content, but if there is no sign they have been added to endorse the content, they are allowed.
    • If a nickel link contains something particularly disturbing but which is still allowed in a nickel link, the nickel page should contain a content warning.
