There is no such thing as "we".
If anybody assumes that society is about people just spontaneously deciding every way society will be, the people who actually make the decisions of whether it will be that way are always the most strong and able-bodied and sometimes the most prejudiced people in society. Every time. It won't be any other way. The moment a single individual who wants society to be "pacifistic" gets tired or injured or calls in sick, a stronger person immediately takes over. And that person who is able to come in every week due to their own privileged circumstances is the person who gets to decide what every single bit of ethics and society is.
So in the end, there's not really any such thing as "pacifism" and simply "deciding to be a pacifist" ...
The entire exercise of ethics is and can only be the exercise of figuring out how to actually get to make decisions for society when society is inevitably controlled by a small handful of especially capable or healthy people who likely refuse your control and get to make all the decisions.

I have had very bad experiences with people 'wanting to build an empathetic society' and then that empathetic society is all the most perfect and privileged people boxing up every person that isn't exactly like them because they really think "showing people love and pacifism" is keeping other people from being themselves and molding them into their image. So I have become very skeptical that anyone who claims to be about pacifism or love really is about anything other than manipulating and controlling people. ...
