the significance of this entry is that it represents a moment of applying Materialism to useful ends to understand society, but in particular, eclectic materialism. we start with the concept of a witch trial in tribal society, which is first of all an investigation of causality. these investigations are non-Materialist and more or less track the flow of Ideals through society and their collision. when Liberal-republicanism is created, crime investigations turn into an exercise in bourgeois materialism, focusing on verifiable causes and physically-existing people or processes to construct a plausible account of how an event happened. but although this bourgeois materialism is great in many situations, there are also situations where it will construct a causal account of an event that's totally spurious; it will contain accurate material knowledge and knowledge of causality and yet it will be fiction. that's the "Diamond Tiara did it" moment; that's what this motif is. these moments reveal that bourgeois materialism has gaps in it and that basically there are moments when it seems as imprecise as Idealist models like witchcraft investigations or early alchemy.
