Japanese speakers do not think about the future; the non-past tense means that present and future events actually happen at the same time -> this is what that study on the Hopi language sounded like to me. with the Japanese language you see that the information of when something happened is just encoded into other words in the sentence. so I'm going to take a wild guess and guess that the Hopi language in fact operates about the same.
