Background

Within philosophy, there exist two approaches opposed to each other which philosophers call Idealism and Materialism. In everyday life, most people tend not to have any idea what these categories actually contain, leading to confusion, anger, and suspicion if anyone refers to these categories with formal philosophy terms. Idealism is often assumed to mean imagination or utopianism while Materialism is often assumed to mean a narrow and literal view of larger systems, and if you're especially unlucky, somebody might start talking about "the middle ground" between these two perceived errors from real-world experience. In light of this, it might be better to present people with the philosophical categories of Idea philosophy and Matter philosophy.

Matter philosophy is the philosophy of how to identify and reconstruct real-world causality, such as the scientific method.

Idea philosophy is philosophy which reconstructs the world from abstract qualities or principles, such as alchemy, the four humors model, virtue ethics, Greek mythology (see: Greek gods as qualities of nature), and Pokémon types.

At times, Matter philosophy has put forward the assertion that Idea philosophy is almost wholly unnecessary in that the origins of every claim being used to model the world inside Idea philosophy can be traced back to contingent conditions that distort people's view of the world whose own origins can all be modeled and explained within Matter philosophy — in short, people would be believing in Idea philosophy for reasons they never chose themselves nor reached through logic they constructed themselves. If the claim is accurate, this would create troubling consequences for the entire field of philosophy, because the entire concept of building up or explaining points of view against other points of view would not be operative and many people would be unable to truly choose between different philosophies or determine which philosophies were better, worse, less harmful, or more harmful. There would be no concept of "agreeing or disagreeing", much less "agreeing to disagree", and there would be no such thing as a "marketplace of philosophies", because people's ability to make their own decisions at all would depend on their ability to comprehend what alternatives they were making decisions between and that comprehension would be absent. If any other philosophy were better, people would have no idea and would be unable to choose to believe anything other than what they already believe.

Regardless of its utility in the real world, Idea philosophy will always have niche uses in places such as creating fictional narratives. Idea philosophy can be used to break from the causality of the real world and create fictional universes that function completely differently, basing their causality on concepts such as fantasy elements being inherently effective against other elements (water defeats fire) or concepts occurring in opposition to other concepts just because in the author's mind or memory they are inherently connected (old is opposed to young; grandmother is opposed to misbehaving child).

Usage notes

Topics ordinary people find especially confusing should be explained in simple terms that real-world people living in real-world conditions would find unambiguous, and without overly-specific related explanations that might get in the way of understanding the ambiguous topic.

Do not add explanations to this page actively arguing for Marxism / Communism. This could bring confusion about the scope and intentions of Matter philosophy. (This rule does not apply to most other pages.)

Truth values

pronounced 87. (S)pronounced ⧼hue-philosophy-tts-HAS/en⧽ ⧼hue-philosophy-HAS/en⧽ /non-Idealist statement (truth value) (Q87/FT)1-1-1

These Senses may be used to classify propositions by whether they are based on Idea philosophy or not. "Idealist statement" covers statements where a chain of reasoning grounded in Idea-philosophy has clearly been demonstrated. "Non-Idealist statement" extends to statements which are not clearly based in Idea-philosophy but which are not fully operating within Matter-philosophy, hence why it is crimson and not orange.
