bright lights

- zebra manager kidnaps ponies
oh, he's trying to trap them in the band to like, get them in debt to a record label or whatever
- no. this is the story where a wizard takes everyone's shadows.

this is..... it kind of is a representation of record labels taking stuff but it's much more abstract so it can get away with it.
Night Shade is clearly set up as the victim in the story. he has to help the wizard get more shadows to become better able to exploit people. interestingly, the whole population, not just the creatures he already controls.
Night Shade is the point of view character. taking shadows, the wizard turns into a bigger storm cloud with more power

- "we're gonna make you sorry"
I found this song out of context yesterday and I had absolutely no idea what it was about. really shows that the worldbuilding of this show is amazing when you actually can't connect it back to reality when it's out of context
honestly, Idealism may be dumb for modeling the real world but this is its true purpose: constructing total and utter nonsense and making you care about it because you remember the rules
I suppose in that regard this episode failed a little because I actually did see through it?? not that that upsets me
