Usage notes[edit]
As much as this has similarities to the "stupid idiot garbage trash" motifs, they represent different degrees of the same thing; this motif is a much more surface-level, less-intense kind of rejection. The "stupid idiot garbage trash" motifs are meant to suggest something that is fundamentally not tolerated and pushed away from some corner of society every time, while "anime, which is bad" is meant to apply to things that are about halfway tolerated and halfway rejected, often in strange ways. In some cases, "anime" is accepted precisely inside the social understanding that Japanese media are lesser than United States media if one can at all notice a distinction between the two, or exoticized as if other countries must perform a particular cultural identity to be accepted as adding something to another society. At other times the original context of a work is actually understood, only to then degrade the work for reasons unrelated to where it came from, such as for being a piece of Young Adult fiction, being a highschool drama, including giant monsters, or being part of some particular "unappealing" category of genre fiction.
Note that audiences degrading a work for objectifying women or girls does not count within this motif. This motif is only for "kid-friendly" reasons people reject anime and manga; "anime, which is for perverts" is a different motif entirely. However, this motif could apply to manga if everything is the same except the work is a printed book.
