Usage notes
"Marxism-Leninism" and "mainstream Marxism-Leninism" are the same thing, although the term "Leninism" by itself has two uses: referring to almost all Marxisms, or referring to Trotskyism.
In most contexts, "Marxism-Leninism" is an acceptable and common name for this division of Marxism. "Mainstream Marxism-Leninism" is something of a meta-Marxism "-ism" created to make it easier to talk about Stalin's Marxism and Trotskyism in parallel within the same text (or other variations like Western Marxism that may equally try to assert some part of mainstream Marxism-Leninism to not be legitimate) without asserting any particular ontological definition as inherently correct. This term is largely used for the rhetorical purpose of attempting to get Trotskyists and veiled anticommunists to read about mainstream Marxism-Leninism and think about themselves in relation to it rather than in opposition to it.
