Z1 Items, also known as Z Items, are literal entities which can be considered as representing themselves rather than acting as symbols, and which are suitable for use in the signified part of a signifier equation.

Z Items usually describe concrete real-life objects or processes. Typically, a Z Item describes either a spacetime-unique instance of something that exists in the real world, such as a country, a language, or a specific text, or describes a non-unique object or process whose existence is well substantiated, such as quarks or electromagnetism. Some real-world things which are best described as abstract categories are instead classified as S0 Items.
